Review: Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer in Golden Neutral

You all know I went on a little Sephora shopping spree awhile ago. One of the products I purchased was the new Clinique beyond perfecting foundation + concealer (PHEW…that was kind of long!).

The only other Clinique foundation I have tried was the stay matte foundation which I really loved.  I was curious how this would perform in comparison.

This retails for $27 and you get 1 fluid ounce of product which is the typical amount for a foundation.

This is available in 20 shades.  I was a little taken back by the packaging.  I love that it comes in a glass bottle, but it was MUCH bigger than I had anticipated.  It comes with an angled tip applicator which I really loved.

Let’s talk claims:

“A foundation-and-concealer in one for a natural, beyond perfected look that lasts all day.  Lightweight, moisturizing makeup covers thoroughly without clogging pores.  Skin breathes comfortably, colour stays true, even through sweat and humidity.”

  • Full coverage
  • Lightweight feel
  • 12 hour wear
  • Natural matte finish
  • Breathable formula
  • Dual-sphere particles to absorb oil and add hydration
  • Unique applicator

I found this to be true.  It is very comfortable and lightweight and the color did not oxidize throughout the day.  I did wear it on an unusually long and hot day and it stayed on beautifully.  I also appreciate that this is allergy tested.  I did not experience any breakouts or allergic reactions when wearing it.

I will say this though.  It did cling to my dry patches a bit and looked a little cakey in some areas.  When applied with my fingers it gave a more full coverage.  When using a sponge I definitely got a more medium coverage and the dry patches were less apparent.  It gave me a natural, matte finish.

It is a little thicker in consistency which is why I love the angled wand so much.  I can’t imagine trying to pour this product out successfully.  It also claims to add hydration where needed and absorb excess oil where needed (kind of sounds like the Tarte amazonian clay foundation).

Clinique does suggest to use the large backside of the angled wand to sweet foundation across your forehead, cheeks and chin.  Then you can use the tip to cover the tighter and smaller areas of your face.  You can go back and spot conceal in any areas that you need.

As I said before, it wore beautifully throughout the day.  I didn’t notice any obvious break down, but I did notice a lot of oil.  In fact, I was a little more oily than I usually get with my other foundations.  I noticed I had to blot 3-4 times throughout the day and I normally only blot once.

It seemed that a lot of the shades in store leaned more on the pink side which is unfortunate.  I did find that 08 Golden Neutral was more yellow, but it was a little dark for me right now.  It will be the perfect shade in the summer though.  On Cliniques’ website they do state that shades may appear deeper when you first apply them.  Once it is blended and dried, the shade is a better match.  I definitely found this to be true.  It looked orange when I first applied it, but blended in very well once it dried.

All in all, I really do like this foundation.  I do have to moisturize my dry spots very well before applying, but it stays on like a dream even though I get a little more oily than normal.  I even went for a long, rigorous hike while wearing this (it was spontaneous or I would have removed my makeup) and it still looked amazing afterward.

I was hoping this might be a dupe for my much loved Estee Lauder Double Wear, but I think that is my all time favorite foundation.

Give it a try! Clinique ‘Beyond Perfecting’ Foundation + Concealer
