Review: Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Palette

I recently splurged on the new Kat Von D Shade and Light contour palette.

Believe it or not, this is the first Kat Von D product I’ve ever tried.  The packaging is ridiculously cute and I love the large mirror that it comes with.  It also has a pretty strong magnetic closure which is nice.

What it is:
An exclusive contour palette featuring three shades for contouring and three shades for highlighting, designed to shape and define facial features to create a look of authentic dimensionality.

What it does:
An expert sketch artist, Kat Von D uses shadow and light to create depth and dimension in her captivating portraits, infusing them with lifelike authenticity. Take artistry shading into your own hands with this Shade + Light Contour Palette. Effortlessly sculpt, chisel, shape, and slenderize your features for enhanced definition. Unlike traditional bronzing powders, the Shade + Light Contour Palette is loaded with a unique selection of matte shades that capture the true hues of shadow and light. The three contour shades create realistic shadows to recede facial features, while the three highlight shades impart a soft luminosity to amplify dimension. A true artist’s palette specially designed to be used with the Shade + Light Contour Brush, these silky, buildable powders blend effortlessly into the skin for a flawless, fade-proof finish that flatters every skin tone or face shape. This set is exclusively available at Sephora.

This palette contains 3 highlight shades and 3 contour shades.  All the shades are pretty matte.

  • Lucid: Pinkish Nude
  • Lyric: Yellow Beige
  • Levitation: Soft Peach
  • Sombre: True Taupe
  • Shadowplay: Soft Brown
  • Subconscious: Deep Brown

This also included “guide” with illustrations on ways to use this palette.  You can also purchase the shade & light brush ($36).  I already have a contour brush that I love so I didn’t feel the need to purchase the brush.  Plus, I wasn’t too impressed with it at the store.

Some shades were a little powdery, but overall they are very pigmented and easily blended out.  I would use a light hand with the contour shades (which I learned the hard way.)  🙂

Lasting Power:

The highlight shades last well throughout the day.  I have been using lyric to set my under eye concealer which I LOVE!!  The contour shades do break down throughout the day.  I have been using mostly shadowplay and a little of subconscious when I want a deeper contour.

Did It Cause Irritation:

I didn’t experience any allergic reactions or irritation from this product.

Overall Thoughts:

I was a little put off by the price of this palette.  But I love that I have so many color options.  I realized the shades can also be used as eyeshadow which makes this even more amazing.  I can do a really simple and natural eye look.  I could see myself using just this palette when traveling.  I also love how large the pans are.  With other contour palettes I’ve seen it seems like you aren’t getting much product.  I can see this palette lasting me awhile.

Have a beautiful day!

xoxo Lizzie♥

Love the review, now i wan’t to try it even more!

    1. What a shame! It’s expensive here so I can’t imagine how much more it would be in the UK!

      1. Its £100 here, which is just absolute insanity. I recently sold my old iphone 4 for £50 if that puts it into perspective haha!

      2. Wow. That’s ridiculous!

I’m not crazy about the $46 price tag on this however I feel like it does look better than some of her older items, when I went to my nearest Sephora to look for the chrysalis palette I was so unimpressed by how flimsy the metal was and how the screws on the back looked like they were falling out. I’m really glad she re-designed some things and it looks so much better. You definitely made me want to get this!

    1. Wow! I have never seen her older products. Then this is definitely much better! The packaging is so sleek.
