Review: Dear Clark Volumizing Hair Tonic

I have been on the hunt for the perfect hair volumizing spray. I have tried about 5 so far and have yet to be impressed. I received the Dear Clark volumizing hair tonic in my March Birchbox and was excited to add it to my list of volumizing sprays.

Their packaging and the companys website is super cute!  This product is made in Texas and is made with some “powerful” ingredients: Rose of Jericho, Aloe Vera, Sunflower Seed Oil and these essential oils: patchouli, tangerine, lavender, mandarin, clove bud, clary sage, geranium, bergamot, neroli, and jasmine.

This claims to deliver “Big Texas Hair.”  Now….that’s not exactly what I’m going for.  But I will take a half serving of big texas hair…like medium?  It is shine inflused, strengthening, and silicone-free.

The directions say to spray 2-4 pumps at the roots of towel-dried hair and distribute evenly.  Then dry as usual.

I always smell products before I use them and this baby has a really strong scent.  It instantly reminded me of a woodsy, musky, masculine, spicy kind of smell.  Now, I’m not saying it smells bad.  But it is not my cup of tea.

I still opted to try it out though.  I sprayed 6 pumps all together (2 on each side and 2 in the back) and then blow dried my hair.  I didn’t even style my hair with my round brush.  I just blow dried it with my fingers.  And would you believe it?  This stuff gave my hair some volume!  This is the first volumizing product that has given me any lift.  I wouldn’t say it was big Texas hair…but then again…I didn’t finish out my style yet.

And the nice thing was that it didn’t dry out my hair or feel too sticky.  It did feel just slightly stiff, like I had sprayed a little bit of hairspray.  But it really wasn’t bad and I’m sure that’s just to hold the amazing volume it gave me.

Here’s my issue.  The scent was really getting to me.  I am extremely sensitive to fragrances and strong smells and so this hit me hard.  It wasn’t long before I had a headache and it lingered throughout the day.  The smell did die down a bit, but every time I got a whiff I wanted to run to the shower and wash my hair.

Now if this company came out with an unscented version, then I’d be the first in line to buy it.  If you are not sensitive to scents like I am, then I’d say go for it!  It really is a great product and I’m so disappointed that I can’t use it.  It is going to a nice home though.  A friend of mine already claimed it!  🙂

This retails for $26 for 6 oz of product.

Such a bummer about the scent. Hopefully they will come up with an unscented one. Great review! 🙂 xo
